Travel company KAYAK analyzed the 100 most-searched departure airports to find out the likelihood of facing delays this summer.
"If you had a sneaking suspicion that more flights were delayed and canceled in 2024 than in 2023, you’d be half right," according to the report. "Canceled flights in all analyzed airports in the U.S. in 2024 decreased by 0.2 percentage points — which translates to thousands fewer cancelations, while delays increased from 27% to 29%."
Smaller airports tended to fare better against delays.
"Our 2024 data shows that airports like Fresno and Palm Springs in California, plus Honolulu in Hawaii, had some of the fewest flight delays last year," according to the report. "Meanwhile, at JFK, nearly half of flights took off late. Newark? Not really better either, while delays are slightly less, the cancelation rate is even worse."

According to the study, delayed flights out of the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport had an average delay of about 25 minutes. Overall, 21.2% of flights were delayed there last year.
The airport ranked 52nd in the report.
The Akron-Canton Airport in Green wasn't included in the report.
The American Automobile Association is forecasting that 5.84 million travelers will fly to their Independence Day destination — 8% of all travelers for the holiday.
"This year’s projection is a 1.4% increase over the previous record set last Independence Day week of 5.76 million air travelers," the AAA said in a prepared statement. "According to AAA data, which is based on what travelers paid when they booked their July 4th trips, a roundtrip domestic flight is averaging $810, 4% more expensive than last year."
KAYAK reported fewer delays and lower fares on July 2 and July 4. One in three flights ran late last year on June 30.
According to the report, October fared the best out of any month in 2024 for delays, with just 18% of flights being delayed in the U.S. Flights earlier in the morning, from around 5 to 7 a.m., had the lowest rates of delays, whereas flights from 6 to 10 p.m. were most likely to face a delay.
